DI Boxes Part 7: Amplifier Emulation DIs
In March of 2015 I published a video entitled "Stompbox/Pedal DIs" featuring the Sansamp Bass Driver DI, a relatively early solid state emulation of a classic tube bass amplifier. Since then, amp emulation technology has come a long way! In this video I discuss how to deal with this type of DI as a live sound engineer, and cover specific features of the Origin Effects Bassrig '64 Black Panel, one of the best current examples of the type.

Note that this video is not intended to be a full review of this pedal. Rather it is a discussion of how to approach this type of DI as a live sound engineer.
The bass used for all the demos in the video is my 2013 Fender American Standard Precision Bass, strung with D'Addario Chromes flatwound strings. The bass was plugged directly into the Origin Effects '64 Black Panel. The DI OUT and AMP OUT connectors of the pedal were connected to a Tascam DR-100mkIII recorder. The audio was synched in post, the output being recorded is indicated on the screen during the various demo segments.
Many thanks to my friend and fellow musician H.C. Hiew for the loan of the DI box featured in the video.
Erratum: At 29:40 the on-screen annotation says "of of control"; this should read "out of control". Apologies for the error.

i’ve been back and forth between the 58a and the 58 and this video is what helped me decide to get the beta version

Thanks, this really helpsa alot
Plz one video on this
How to connect two digital console two different brand just like dlive s7000 and midas m32
and what about connecting 2 mixers to one audio-interface to compensate for the lack of enough inputs ?
You would probably use the same method, with the outputs of the second mixer connected to the audio interface.
Hey, I'm having trouble recording vocals. My setup is as follows: Mic XLR to Zed, click record, and also click record bus. However, I can't hear my instrumental unless I track it out to the board, which results in a two-track recording with both vocals and the instrumental when I record back into my DAW. My connections are: - Main mix out to the interface - Record out to monitor mixer - Monitor mixer out to interface 1-2 Please help if you can.
I would say make sure that the ST-2 track is NOT assigned to the record bus - this will prevent it from going back into your DAW and being recorded again.
If you see this comment, I just wanted to say this is the best explanation video for the MG124. I have an MG166CX-USB myself, but I didn’t know everything until now. Your explanation was super clear. Thank you so much! Sending love from Sri Lanka!
That's great, very glad the video was helpful!
Are all those channels produce good sound?
Sorry I don't understand your question.
Thank you, you are a great teacher lad! 😁 I wish you have covered also the groups ...
Thanks for watching Herbie.
For the first 14 minutes I thought he was explaining it to me lol 😂
That the idea 😄 Thanks for watching!
Hi, if I turn off this unit from the back, my guitar signal would it still go to the amp?Thank you, best review.
I'm not sure, but my recollection is that the unit does not pass signal when powered off.
@@GLBProductions Thanks.
To my ears, the Beta 58A has its advantages. But is it worth 60% more than the SM58? in most cases, probably not.
I would regard them as two different tools for different applications: the Beta58a is not an upgrade to the SM58 - that's why Shure has kept them both in production.
Can have fx on aux in MG20XU?
Not possible with the internal effects on this particular model.
you are the best
Thanks for watching :)
Hi, thank you for this great video 17:22 , this is very important point for me, can i connect xlr to ts jack cable to my speaker? I know it wont be balanced connection but will it work fine? Or will i face some issues? Please note that the cable is 1 meter long max.
You cannot connect the mixer directly to passive speakers, you need to connect to an amplifier first. If the speaker is active you can use the above method.
I was in a jam band 20 years ago. I tried singing into an SM57 but no mater how much pleading I did (TURN IT DOWN!) I could never get my voice's volume up over the rest of the garage band. I did some research and found the Beta 57. The neodymium magnet makes a very big difference. With the purchase of the neodymium (ND) mic the next jam went easier for me. I was getting a much better volume. Ever since I have bought ND or condenser mics.
great video thanks
You're welcome :)
Very detailed. Thank you for this video. Please the output volume using the USB is low, any suggestion what to do in this situation?
This is a known issue with this mixer - the only way to deal with it is to raise the level of the channel gains and/or channel faders above normal operating levels - this will raise the level of the USB output but will also risk distortion. Alternatively, use a separate USB interface with a higher output level.
Thank you very much
You're welcome Dani!
Can you pls reply to this? My dad saw this video and he says that somewhere u mentioned that pfl should always be pressed even during performance and now he's just not using it the ryt way. Please help me!
Certainly! The PFL button is used for two purposes: firstly during gain setting, to show the input level of the selected channel on the meters, and secondly at any time during the performance to monitor the signal and levels to that channel. So there will be times during the performance when it is pressed, but it should not be pressed all the time, as this prevents the output levels of the mixer from being shown on the meters. Hope that helps :)
@@GLBProductions thanks a lot!!!! You're a life saver both your videos and your replies 🫡🥺
You're welcome 😄 All the best with your sound.
The microphone sounds breathy while the pick up sounds throaty, which is better might depend on the composition
Yes - in most cases a blend of the two will yield optimal results.
how does NL4 speakon cable wired into bridge mode?
That depends on the amplifier - some use +1/+2 but check the user manual to be sure.
@@GLBProductions NL 4 has four wires, what about the remaining two wires sir?
@@DJWASAASA They are for bi-amping as well as custom speaker hookups.
Those turbo sound point source speakers still sound great to this day when set up correctly

You're welcome :)
My teacher good job
Thanks for watching :)
So if my bass amps takes a dump and stops working will the PA still get sound or a signal ?
Yes it will.
Very clear info! Thank u
You're welcome Ed!
on channels 5/6 7/8 9/10 11/12 if you put one drum microphone in Left and one microphone in the right , on say channel 5/6. Will both drum mics be used at the same time? What I want to do is use one channel for two drum microphones. That way I can use one channel for two drums. I have a large kit and need all the jacks in order to have all the drums individually mic'ed. Thank you in advance for your response!
Hmm, yes they will, but that is not really the design intent of those channels - they are meant for stereo sources like keyboards, CD players etc. If you connect two separate mics one will be sent only to the left output and the other one only to the right output. So it's possible but I wouldn't recommend it.
Thank you so much for this one friend. For some strange reason, replacing pads on head monitors always terrorized me lol. This gave me confidence. Regarding the DT line, their ear pads look weird even when new. But the headphones are 100% value for money. Best ear monitors i ever had in that price range. I own the open back DT 990.
Glad the video was helpful :)
Please, I have a question: When we are in the process of adjusting the sound and distributing the monitor for the concert, and we turn off the jazz until the concert starts, is it necessary to go back to adjusting the sound and the monitors again? Thank you very much.
It depends on how much the venue has changed - some venues sound very different empty vs. when they are full of people. You should not need to change the monitor mixes though - they should remain fairly consistent from the soundcheck.
Best easy to understand, comprehensive, good Voice
Thanks for watching Alton :)
Thank you so much. Just had a question. I'm trying to run a hybrid event live and online streaming. Where is the best place to put my output for the live streaming? I placed in on headphones output and was just too loud when streaming it online. This is for church.
Yes, don't use the headphone output - it is for headphones 😄 I suggest using either the duplicate STEREO OUT connectors, the MONITOR OUT, or any of the group outputs. The latter two options will give you a separate volume control for the feed to your livestream, if needed.
Sadly I bought a 4-pack of 90 º connectors from amazon with 4-terminals but NONE of the terminals are labeled which sucks because I don't know which to connect the wires !
I suggest you return those and order the genuine Neutrik connectors - they make a right angled version which you may still be able to find in stock: www.neutrik.com/en/product/nl4frx
@@GLBProductions Hi Thanks - after a small eyeball measurement I realized that the 90º connectors I bought only saved 1/4" of distance. Not worth the effort. I believe it's a product that really doesn't even need to be in the marketplace !
Presumably that is why it's been discontinued 😅
Thank you for this tutorial! I find the prying part a little scary, but managed to pull through nonetheless. After replacing the ear pad, I noticed a dramatic improvement over the low frequency :)
9:13 totally agree here. It's been 10 years of my old dt880, still my daily drive, really a solid investment
You're welcome, glad the video was helpful :)
The first time i used mixer, i was somehow good but not perfect because there were things which was Disturbing me while i was using. But after Learning your Lesson here, am now perfect and good to use it. Thank you so much and Be Blessed
You're most welcome Kipruto, all the best with your music!
What if i connect my left and right channel to one speaker
That is actually what bridge mono mode is: using both left and right channels of the amplifier to drive a single loudspeaker. However do not do this with a normal non-bridged amplifier, you will very likely damage things.
Thank you from 2024
You're welcome! From 2024 😄😄😄
Have you done one specifically on the crown xti series? I have a 4002 xti
No I have not. That amplifier has no physical switch to activate bridge mono mode - the switching is done from within the menu system, as outlined in the user manual.
I have a Powered Mixer capable of powering 2 Passive speakers with 100W RMS at 4 ohms per channel (each of its 2 outputs). What would be the highest rated speakers I should use?
Any speaker which has a power handling of more than 50 watts into 8 ohms (roughly) can be used. There is no upper limit really. The aim of the video is to show you what the best match would be.
I have two double bass bin and two mid speakers how can I connect to My amplifier that's 5000watteg
You would need to run the two subs off one channel and the two midrange speakers off the other one, there isn't any other option really.
Helped me convert my PIG HOG 14 AWG speaker cables to SpeakON on one end and 1/4" mono on the other. Subbed!
Awesome to hear that!
Sir at 25:30 the connection to the speaker from amplifier is little bit confused (you've said from amp out to speaker input but you've connected to output of the speaker sir )can you please reply me please
Ah yes I can see - the two connectors on the loudspeaker are actually wired in parallel, so either one can be used as an input, and the other as an output.
I have several SRM 150 monitors. For a normal lounge, or nightclub situation these are fantastic.
As monitors presumably, not as main speakers 😅
@@GLBProductions Actually, I have used them (2) in a "Nursing Home", living room environment. I recall setting up a keyboard in front of a fireplace with a wheelchair/sofa audience of about 20 people. Placement is important. If they're too loud your vocal mic will pick up the monitor and add "mud" to your FOH system. The best placement is on a mic stand, in front of you, pointing back at you.
When using 2 condenser microphones that need phantom power they need to be used on channel 1-6 correct? and when using phantom power, if you use 2 condenser mics and 3 other mics, will the regular mics be ruined?
Yes, the phantom power is only present at the XLR inputs. Non condenser mics will generally ignore phantom power and will not be damaged by it - there are some exceptions to this such as very old ribbon mics, but I doubt you're using those. Also remember not to plug and unplug XLR connectors while the phantom power is on.
@@GLBProductions thank you for your response!
Don't buy this one for any USB applications: it only sends pre-fader via USB, only stereo, so the USB feature is basically useless. Consider that you need a dedicated audio USB interface with this mixer at all times.
I disagree: the USB interface on this mixer is intended for utility applications: basic 2-track recording as well as simple playback of background music etc. For those purposes it works well and is useful.
at back of the speaker where to insert the cable is it the input or the output?
I'm sorry I don't understand your question.
